The Best of London's Most Iconic Films

Posted by abohan Kamis, 28 Juni 2012 0 komentar

London is a city captured throughout the ages in literature, paintings, and now in cinema. Its historic buildings, famous monuments and striking skyline have all set the scene for some of British cinema's most iconic moments.

Oliver Twist (1948)

David Lean's gritty take on Dickens' most famous novel shows a decaying London far removed from the vibrant technicolour of the musical version. Alec Guinness' transformation into Fagin is matched by the film's recreation of key locations from the East End to London Bridge; all of which were filmed inside Pinewood studios.

James Bond films (from 1962)

London has always set the scene for Britain's most famous celluloid spy. But in recent years the capital has taken a starring role, most notably in The World Is Not Enough with Pierce Brosnan's unforgettable speedboat chase down the Thames to the Millennium Dome. And with a gun-toting, suited Daniel Craig spotted in full flight around London’s streets recently, it looks as though the capital is set to feature prominently in the upcoming release, Skyfall.

Hard Day's Night (1964)

The Beatles may have inadvertently pioneered both the music video and the mockumentary genre in this comedy about the Fab Four travelling from Liverpool to play a London concert. Taking in a whole host of locations from Paddington Station to the Hammersmith Odeon, Ringo even manages to get himself lost all the way out in Twickenham – where he dives into the Turk's Head pub!

Alfie (1966)
During the Swinging Sixties, London was a hotbed of artistic creativity, fashion and style. But this was a film which depicted the city with a gritty realism, and through Michael Caine’s young, care-free protagonist, explored some important gender and social issues. As the narrative unfolds, Alfie begins to realise the consequences of his lifestyle and decides to change, only to be confounded in the film’s memorable final scene, filmed on Waterloo Bridge.

Sherlock Holmes films (from 1970)

Sherlock Holmes is a franchise which virtually guarantees success: from Basil Rathbone to Robert Downey Junior. The continued popularity of the character and his mysteries is one reason why his residence at 221b Baker Street is still one of London's biggest tourist attractions.

Notting Hill (1999)

The unashamedly sentimental romantic comedy sees Julia Roberts as a Hollywood film star who falls in love with bookshop owner Hugh Grant, all set in – you guessed it – Notting Hill. The numerous street scenes filmed on location popularised the idea of Notting Hill being the place to be in 1990s London.

Harry Potter films (from 2001)

The most successful movie franchise in history boasts a cavalcade of British film stars. But the magical tale of a young boy who becomes a wizard begins humbly at King's Cross station. The amazing scene where Harry discovers a hidden “Platform nine-and-three-quarters” had tourists flocking to the station, and a signpost to the platform was added – so that even Muggles would be able to find it!

The King's Speech (2010)

The surprise success of this low key royal drama earned Colin Firth the attention – and the accolades – that he had deserved for so long. His performance as a stammering George VI was matched by the sumptuous scenery and the dingy urban apartments. From Logue's consultancy room in Elephant and Castle to Regent's Park and Lancaster House (standing in for Buckingham Palace), the King's Speech offered a visually broad sweep of 1930s London.

From the everyday to the extraordinary, the urban to the fantastical; London has set the scene for countless cinematic moments that have defined every era of the cinema.

Why Is David Beckham Still An Icon?

Posted by abohan Selasa, 19 Juni 2012 0 komentar
How a one man global brand continues to be idolised.

Transcending Topics

Ever since scoring that famous goal from the halfway line many years ago, David Beckham slowly became a global icon. Whether it was his exploits on the football pitch, latest tastes in men’s fashion and hairstyles, or appearances on global chat shows, interest in the man has always been at fever pitch.

Not always in a positive light it must be said, whether it be crimes against men’s fashion, such as the sarong, getting sent off playing for England or alleged extra-marital affairs, there has always been reasons for those intent on disliking him to do just that.

What cannot be doubted is that he is one of the world’s truly instantly recognisable faces, and as he reaches the end of his football career he is probably becoming more appreciated. Through numerous appearances in magazines such as GQ, as well as even more “Best Dressed” and “Sexiest Man” awards, Beckham transcends not only his sport and men’s fashion, but across the whole of global society.

As A Fashion Icon

While I mentioned the sarong earlier, it would be fair to say that that was probably Beckham’s first fashion controversy, and was so long ago now to have been forgiven, if not completely forgotten. Whether it is modelling underwear, Police sunglasses or the latest Adidas football boot, Beckham has enough men’s fashion experience under his belt to truly be held up above his peers.

His success and drive has been such that he designed his own range of children’s clothing for sale in Marks And Spencer, as well as having a hugely successful range of fragrances on the market bearing his and wife Victoria’s names.

Today usually seen in a sharp suit, many men look at Beckham, whether they admit it or not is another matter, and aspire to look and be like him, whether it be in footballing ability, looks or even his extensive tattoos.

Further Afield

A huge commitment to charitable causes has also raised his status throughout the world. Whether it be for global charities such as UNICEF or visiting children’s hospitals around the United Kingdom, Beckham is always on hand to help out a good cause, and is rightfully commended for that. Numerous appearances in advertising campaigns, video games and chat shows continue to make him one of the world’s best known people.

Football, men’s fashion, tattoos, fragrances, or the Spice Girls, no matter how you connect with David Beckham, he is, and will continue to be, a global icon for a long time to come.

Am I "American Idol" Worthy? Could I Make It Up Levels?

Posted by abohan 0 komentar
We've all asked ourselves at some point if we are "American Idol" worthy of being on the show. Maybe even making it to the next level or two on the hit television series.

Maybe you have even thought about winning the entire series yourself and being the next "American Idol" winner. This is not an uncommon dream just so your not too ashamed of thinking it. It is human instinct to have faith in your own personal talents.

It is very natural for a person to believe that their singing voice is as good as an actual great vocalist. Don't get me wrong, almost anybody can sing well with the correct training and lessons from professionals. A lot of artists with hit singles on the radio today don't have that great of voices. With the help of technology and vocalist coaches, you can make it pretty far.

I believe that there is a step of levels that a person must succeed at in order to make it to the next level. Go over these variables just in case you believe that you might be the next American Idol.

1. Natural Singing Talent

I would say this is the biggest step of all of the variables. You need an excellent voice and it's most important of all other aspects. No matter how you display yourself physically, you must have a decent voice naturally. Most of us are not naturally gifted, so you may strike out in this variable very easily.

2. Your Song Working With Your Voice

Choosing your song is a huge deal because it displays your voice in every aspect imaginable. It also describes the style of person you are and what style of celebrity you plan to be. If you do not choose the correct song to display your voice, you may wreck your chances. Having an excellent voice and singing the wrong song to your voice could heavily dampen your odds.

3. Physically Displaying Yourself

How you display yourself is a very important variable to the judges of "American Idol." They look at the next American Idol winner as someone that could be idolized. Also, to be a person for people to look up to. You can take that however you want, but how you represent yourself is a huge variable for the judges to determine. You may have the best voice in this world, but you will not make it to the next level if you did not display yourself to the judges properly to their liking.

4. Judges Mood At Your Performance

This variable may not seem like one of the top ones that should be in this list, but if you watch a lot of "American Idol" you will realize that the mood of the judges is a huge factor. There have been a lot of people that should not have gone to the next level but they said or did the right thing to the judges. That factoring them to have made it to the next level which means a lot. Even if you did not win American Idol, it still helps to make it up levels. It still means a lot to your resume and music career. Some of the best music artists have made it huge that only went a couple levels deep on the show.

That sums up our levels of variables when it comes to leveling up in the "American Idol" television series. Maybe you agree with the variables, maybe you disagree. Feel free to exchange thoughts or disagreements you have about the variables. I'm an "American Idol" guru and I have seen pretty much every episode available. This is pure opinion based so don't be afraid to share your opinion as well. Who knows maybe you're going to be the next American Idol.

The author Chris Weber doesn't write too much about television shows like this but made an exception for such a phenomenal craze like American Idol. It blows his mind at how popular such an idea can become like this. Check out other viral articles written by Chris for fun reading.

Close Encounters Of The My Kind

Posted by abohan Kamis, 10 Mei 2012 0 komentar
Ever since watching the X-Files when I was a young child, I've been interested in the paranormal, especially when it comes to aliens and UFOs. It was easy to get by with this interest as a child, because many people chalked it up to my youth. It becomes more difficult to have this interest when you're older, because most people believe your reasoning should have gotten you over that type of interest, but getting older only gave me a better pair of eyes to view my interest.

Real Evidence

When I was a kid, I would most likely believe anyone that told me they had seen a UFO hovering over my hometown and had no idea how to explain it. I grew older though, and even got two degrees in research intensive areas, so now I know how to legitimately research claims that something paranormal occurred. I haven't lost my believe in the extraterrestrial, it is just more refined now and less likely to be duped.

I love going through real evidence. I used to think that pictures were the most evidence you could come by. Now I know I can contact local authorities, airports, military bases, and nearby neighbors to verify whether something strange was in the sky on a certain night. It makes the search for extraterrestrial life seem a bit more legitimate.

Others Who Are Interested

Many people would assume that it would be hard to find people with this shared interest, but luckily, the X-Files helped me out with that as well. An actual organization know as the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) was featured in the show several times, and they have branches all over America. Each branch meets once a month to discuss topics.

Although many at the meetings don't share the skeptical mind that I've developed and my need for concrete evidence, they actually enjoy the counterpoints at each meeting. They will discuss what someone claimed to have seen, and I will press them for any supporting evidence. It's something that I enjoy thoroughly. as I'm not trying to debunk anything they're saying, I would just love to have something provable to show someone.

It may seem like a strange interest to have, especially since paranormal dramas are nowhere near as culturally relevant as they used to be, but it's something I enjoy. It gives me something to do and takes me back to my childhood, and anything in an adult life that can transport you back to childhood isn't strange at all.
